I feel a strong connection with the extraordinary experiences of ordinary people. Through observation and the cultivation of intimate relationships I am able to explore my own personal and cultural history and create work that brings form to that connection.
I was born into a family affected by disabilities and dejection. Growing up with those overwhelmed by these issues has inspired me to find beauty in how people struggle to survive.
The work covers a variety of subjects that I have always been deeply affected by World War II, religion, politics, and struggles seen in my own family. Im interested in how people become isolated both internally and socially through the endurance of these struggles. My work tries to examine the complexity of the individual by unearthing characteristics that have been buried from their own awareness.
The work takes the form of narrative sculpture and drawings. The use of mixed mediums in both the sculptures and the drawings is an intuitive process which allows the symbolism in my work to be revealed through experimentation. The aesthetic use of crude industrial materials is intended to clash with smooth naturalistic rendering, creating a dichotomy between what I see as real and what happens in my imagination.
I use my practice as both an escape from and a means of engagement with my surroundings.
